70 Clark Street was built on the site of the the Sands Street Memorial Methodist Episcopal church that was erected in 1794. “The church came to the neighborhood from Sands Street in 1889 to allow for the building of the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge.  After its membership declined over the years, it was sold and torn down in 1947 for the International Style apartment building there today.”
